The Vanguart Presents The Exonerated: Stories of Justice and Humanity

Through the powerful production of The Exonerated, The Vanguart Performing Arts Foundation brings to the stage real-life accounts of inmates who faced death row for crimes they didn’t commit. Directed by La’Charles Purvey, often called “Oklahoma City’s Tyler Perry,” the play shares the voices of six wrongfully convicted individuals through their own words, drawn from letters, interviews, and court records.

For Regina Banks, founder of The Vanguart, the play resonates on a personal level. Banks shares a connection with Julius Jones, an Oklahoma inmate and former college peer who maintains his innocence on death row.

“I hope people take away from the play that it is entirely too easy to be convicted of a crime today in America,” Banks said.

A portion of the production’s proceeds will benefit the Oklahoma Innocence Project, supporting their work to exonerate death row inmates.
